When I was in high school, the lunch lady in charge of the rolls nicknamed me “Smiley” (along with half of the student body…). I looked for her every time I went through the line and she always hooked me up with fresh rolls that were just out of the oven. On the last day of school as a Senior, I went to the cafeteria to say goodbye before I graduated. I have been stopped more than once by random people in busy public places like shopping malls/airports/hospitals who have thanked me for smiling.
Because of my perpetual smile, most people assume that my life has been a life of ease and tranquility. Trust me when I tell you that it hasn’t. I don’t want to go into gory details or drag any names through the mud, but believe me when I tell you that I have seen my fair share of heartache and challenges. At other seasons of my life I may have even argued that I got more than my fair share.
But I have come to see life as a giant, complicated, but absolutely personalized curriculum customized to each individual. This curriculum is meant to teach us how to have joy. That is why we exist. We are meant to have joy.
Lately I have been thinking about ways to build and constantly improve the joy in everyday life. I developed a list. I researched and created blog posts related to those topics. And then I compiled those thoughts and links into a book. My hope is that this book will help all who read it EVERY TIME they read it. It is not a typical story that is meant to be read from start to finish, but is instead a book that is meant to lead you to follow inspiration and apply the chapters in the order and timetable that work best for you in your current situation.
